Fair Isle / Norwegian style ladies’ mittens knit in five colors with optional embroidery worked once the knitting on the mittens has been finished. The sample mittens were knit in sport weight alpaca yarn at a tighter-than-ball-band gauge to create an especially detailed, warm and durable fabric. Alternatively, if you’d like lighter weight mittens, you can use a fingering weight yarn.
GAUGE: 36 sts and 36 rows = 4” / 10cm in stranded stockinette stitch.
NEEDLES: If you tend to knit loosely, try US size 1 / 2.25mm; if you tend to knit tightly, try US size 1 1/2 / 2.50mm.
YARN: Five different 50g / 115m / 125yd balls of sport weight alpaca were used in the sample mittens. Approximate amounts used from each ball for the finished, knitted and embroidered mittens shown:
Red = 30g, Yellow = 10g, Blue = 5g, Black = 35g and Off White = 30g.
Alternatively, you can use fingering weight yarns for lighter weight mittens.
