“Nordic Easter Egg” is a Fair Isle / Norwegian knitting design for creating egg-shaped Easter decorations with stranded knitting motifs worked in two colors of fingering weight yarn. Suitable for intermediate knitters familiar with stranded knitting and working from charts.

SIZE: 3" / 7.6cm tall egg, when knit to gauge.

GAUGE: 10 stitches per inch shown, using fingering weight yarn, although matching my gauge is not crucial here. What matters is that, whatever yarns you use, both colors knit to the same gauge and that your egg’s gauge is tighter than the ball band gauge, to keep any stuffing from leaking through.

NEEDLES: Anywhere from a US #0 / 2.0mm (for those who knit loosely) to US #1 ½/ 2.5mm (for those who knit tightly) for a fingering weight yarn, as shown, or whatever size needles give you a tighter-than-ball-band gauge for the yarns you’ve chosen.

YARN: One 50g ball, or remnants, for each of the two colors.

NOTIONS:  Wool or polyester batting, to stuff the egg. Wool is wonderful, and it makes a nice, firm stuffing, especially for eggs that are meant to be decorative keepsakes. But, the egg shown is destined to be caressed by sticky little, chocolate-covered fingers…and probably a paw or two. So, I filled it with common polyester batting, which will wash and dry easily. It works just fine! You’ll also want a tapestry needle, for closing the stuffing hole and tucking in loose ends.
