North Star Hat Knitting Pattern PDF
overview:
This is a circularly-knit, two-color hat with a ribbed band at the bottom and traditional Norwegian style stranded knitting motifs covering all rows above. The motifs in the crown are shaped to form a 5-pointed star, when viewed from the top. The I-cord and tassel are optional. The same set of instructions will work for knitting hats in a range of sizes, from youth through extra large adult, provided the gauge is adjusted as indicated in the pattern.
GAUGE: Youth (Adult, XL Adult) = 20 (18, 16) stitches over 4” / 10cm
NEEDLES: Youth (Adult, XL Adult) = US #6 / 4.00mm ( US #7 / 4.50mm, US #8 / 5.00mm) for trim and US #7 / 4.50mm (US #8 / 5.00mm, US #9 / 5.50mm) for main portion.
YARN: The sample shown was knit with two different-colored balls of Dale Garn “Hegre” Aran weight 100% wool yarn, 82 yds / 75 m per 50g ball, which is no longer available in North America. You can substitute for Hegre with other Aran weight wools which are apt to have a ball band gauge close to 16 sts per 4” / 10cm; for children’s hat, I’d suggest worsted weight wools with ball band gauges close to 18 sts per 4” / 10cm. In either case, be sure to knit to the gauge given in the pattern for your preferred size.
